How hard is it to define a genre? Seems near impossible I'm thinking. Wikipedia tells me that Roots music is any music influenced by traditional styles. That surely is every type of music known to man is it not? God, we've all been influenced by what came before. But ok, I kinda get you. Then I looked up folk music which seemed narrowly defined as music with unknown authorship that has been orally passed down from generation to generation. That can't be completely right, right?
Ach. Then I tried folk rock. We describe ourselves as folk rock a lot of times. Are we actually folk rock? This time Mr Google told me that folk rock is a hybrid genre combining elements of folk music with elements of rock. That could be a bit more accurate. You can squint your ears quite a bit to fit into 'combining elements'. It doesn't say which specific elements need to be combined so there seems to be enough flexibility for the likes of us and probably many others.
David hates the genre specification, but it is important to help people know what they are getting into before they hit play, go to a show, or book us. It's always tough to describe your own sound. Because it's you, it feels really difficult to be on the other side of yourself listening objectively. Darn near impossible.
Oh well. It's Friday anyway and we're still going to do what we do, ill-defined or no.
