What a fun bunch of folks that hang out at the Swan in Northall! We came for a bit of fun when we discovered this English pub were near where we were staying in the UK and they have a monthly open mic. We got a whole heap more than we bargained for. The guy who runs the open mic, Richard is exactly as the saying, more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Enthusiastic, energetic, dancing, contagiously fun, and on top of the whole evening which made it run like a top.
We met some fantastic musicians including Matt, Mark, and Ian who was visiting the area from Winnipeg Manitoba! Holy that was a surprise, and an added bit of fun. It was a pretty full house in this beautiful English pub, full of really interesting people who looked to be having the best time listening and adding their own flavours to the mix.
We settled in with a pint of Doom Bar which just excited me since it was the favourite of the main character of one of the novel series I have been obsessed with of late. We immediately felt welcome with the host covering our drinks and chatting with us as he set up the sound system and mics. The night started with each artist doing 3 songs before handing the stage over to the next. It's so nice to hear other people's music and interpretation of life thus far in their experience, I love that. I was really enjoying myself when it came time for us to have a go.
I was just tuning my mandolin at my seat, and over the PA system came the Canadian National Anthem! Richard the fun but really tall imp, put the national anthem on as an introduction! And then it was a hoot. We started to an intent audience that listened and screamed their support after each song. What a crowd! Down to Aidy the drunken sailor (self-identifies this way...) who kept getting 'confused' whether we were Canadian or American. It was an absolute blast. Because we were from away we got a bit longer set, and then we all took some more turns toward the end of the evening.
Well that was fun. Who knew? The amazing people that are out there. Sometimes these unplanned nights are some of the best fun going. Happy day folks.
