Here it comes....are you ready? I love this song and I just want to think about it today and remember it with you all. Here is the link The Black Velvet Band - The Irish Rovers.
Oh what a lovely song. I remember it as a child (I actually had the 45), but I also remember it fondly in pubs of Halifax as a foot stomping, sing-a-long, beer guzzling type of entity. I LOVE it. Songs like this are the best type and they just make me happy.
So I wanted to look up a bit about this song so I could share some history about it, but it is way more complicated than I imagined. Turns out no one really knows when it was written, maybe between 1796 and 1889, goodness... And they have sort of compiled versions that include writers from Australia, England, Ireland, Canada, and the US! Wow. I had no idea. Thanks Wikipedia.
So, I guess loads of people have been enjoying this song for a very long time. It's kind of amazing that a song like that is so completely still relevant in todays world in a way. You play this song downtown Halifax and the place erupts. Probably lots of other places that we don't even know enjoy it too. How cool is that?
When I was little I had this little white suitcase record player with an orange handle. I had various 45s that I really don't know where they all came from, but I had great fun with that one for sure.
I invite you to remember or enjoy that song in whatever way you like, or a song like it from your past that just makes you feel good for lots of reasons. Songs are great to get those great memories going and get you into a positive mood. Why not.
